Bristol - The Mid-90s : Because they are dancing to the same record in totally different styles, Woxy (left), Cheever J Loophole (centre) and Norton (right) collide on a dance floor. They pick each other up, dust themselves down and then look each other square in the eyes.

The sense of destiny is overwhelming.

They strike up a friendship based at first on dancing, DJing and bedroom producing, and rifle through each other’s record bags until no tune is left unchecked. Styles clash in a white heat – soul, happy hardcore, disco, rare groove, house, Funkadelica.

DJs Woxy & Norton begin to spread their wings across the SW club circuit, embracing a new wave of house from DJ Sneak, Thomas Bangalter & Masters At Work.

Meanwhile, Cheever puts out a solo release on his own Space Race imprint and is offered a licence deal by a young Compost Records. He is in session with some now-legendary Bristol labels and starts to spin funk and party music.

But enough is enough - one day they agree that "you can get a triangle shape through a square hole if you grease it up", and their first recording sessions throw up curious results.

The Turbotrax label is set up in January 2000 to showcase their studio output and The Turbomen come into being. Guest vocalists and musicians from Bristol and London start to drop by and join in.

The mission: to inject some much-needed fun and soul back into electronic music.
